When switching to a new phone, it’s crucial to properly transfer your authenticator apps and secure access to apps tied to your old device, like those linked to your phone’s IMEI number or storing sensitive keys (e.g. Coinbase). Authenticator apps don’t automatically transfer codes, so if you don’t back them up or re-link them, you could get locked out of accounts with two-factor authentication enabled. Some services may require complicated identity verification or even deny access if you lose your 2FA setup.
Similarly, apps using device-specific security may stop working or block login attempts until you re-verify your identity. By carefully transferring authenticator apps, saving recovery codes, and updating security settings, you prevent account lockouts and keep your assets and data secure.
So before you transfer to your new device (iPhone or Android) make sure to write down your backup codes from the old device and DO NOT ERASE YOUR OLD DEVICE until the new one is fully set up.
Here’s what to do when getting a new phone, especially with apps tied to your IMEI or storing sensitive info like Crypto wallets:
• Back up your old phone: Use iCloud (iPhone) or Google (Android) to back up everything, including app data.
• Secure old phone: Don’t erase it until everything is set up on the new one. Keep it on-hand for verification if needed.
• Transfer authenticator apps (like Google Authenticator):
• Some don’t transfer automatically. Manually export/import or re-enable 2FA from each service.
Apps tied to IMEI:
• Some security apps use IMEI for identity. You may need to re-verify identity or contact support.
• For ultra-secure apps (like banking or trading), login may trigger ID verification again.
• Coinbase & other wallets:
• Log in with your credentials.
• If you had 2FA via SMS or an authenticator, make sure you still have access to that.
• Hardware wallets or recovery phrases: Keep those stored somewhere safe, they’re not stored on the phone.
• Emails & phone number: Make sure those are active, since they’re often used for login or recovery.
• After successful transfer: Wipe old phone securely if you’re selling or giving it away.
AUTHENTICATOR APPS
Authenticator apps need special care during a phone switch because they don’t automatically transfer codes. Here’s how to handle them:
1. Google Authenticator (or similar apps)
• Open the app on your old phone
• Tap the 3 dots → Transfer accounts → Export accounts
• Use your new phone to scan the QR code and import
2. If export isn’t possible:
• Log in to each app (e.g. Coinbase, Binance, etc.) on your new phone
• Go to the security/2FA settings
• Disable 2FA, then re-enable it to link the new phone’s authenticator
3. Microsoft Authenticator (if used):
• Back it up to the cloud (from old phone)
• Restore on new phone by signing into your Microsoft account
4. Always save backup codes or recovery keys
• These let you get back in if you lose access to your authenticator
• Store them in a secure password manager or physical safe spot
Tip: Don’t erase your old phone until all authenticator codes are working on your new one.
