Lessons from a DV survivor

What I’ve learned as a DV & trauma survivor:

  1. Stress & abuse causes serious health issues.
  2. Suppression is NOT healing, it makes it worse.
  3. Healing takes time & you can’t just “let go”.
  4. Forgive yourself, not the abuser.
  5. Many humans don’t have compassion.
  6. Moving on without healing = suppression.
  7. Each abuse situation is unique & there are levels of severity. All abuse is abuse.
  8. “Being a victim” & “playing a victim” are very different things. Being = real, Playing = fake.
  9. Victim is not a bad word, it is a real experience for many people, & should be acknowledged as such.
  10. Excuse means choice, Reason means no choice.
  11. When you tell your story remember heartless victim blamers exist.
  12. Some victims had red flags, some didn’t.
  13. Music can help you heal, learn an instrument, and express your feelings in a healthy way.
  14. Take care of your physical body with anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle because abuse can cause chronic inflammation.
  15. Real victims are constantly in a state of self blame, so remember the abuser is the only one to blame.
  16. Abusers thieves that steal a victim’s self worth; most victims had self worth before the abuse.
  17. Abusers are manipulators and con-artists.
  18. Abusers can either show who they are immediately or lead you on until one day they show their true abusive side. The latter is harder to spot.
